The Month of October

In your child's folder tonight you will see many pieces of paper!  Please read all of them carefully.  There is a new math homework packet, information about upcoming events and a book order.  Remember that your first grader only needs to complete one math worksheet per night and return it to school the next day.

Ava started the day out in a fun way by cashing in her "Stinky Feet" card to wear only socks in the classroom!  Colin also ran Morning Meeting for us to celebrate his awesome behavior.

Today in S.W.R. we introduced the phonemes, "n", "k", and "d". We practiced writing these letters and we listed words that started and ended with these sounds.  Our red words of the week are have and by. Our new word family is the "ad" family.  We are still working to uppercase the beginning of sentences, complete them with a period and capitalize names of people.

In math we learned that we always need to label our numbers with units.  How many _____ do you have?  To practice this I dropped pennies into a bucket, they listened to how many pennies dropped, and then we labeled the bucket with , "5 pennies" and "7 pennies".  We even got to pretend they weren't pennies and we dropped elephants, sharks, dollars and beautiful flowers into our bucket.  When completing math homework with your student, encourage them to label their math work with units.  After practicing that, we got to explore with calculators for the first time this year.  This was definitely a highlight for the first graders and they loved to show me how they could skip count by pressing the equal sign and how they could add numbers together.

In reading today we read the story, My Great-Aunt Arizona.  One of our favorite parts of this story was that the main character, Arizona, got older as the story went on.  This was different from any other book we've read this year because in our other stories the main character stays the same age for the entire book.  We responded to this story in our reading notebooks and then could choose to read independently, with a partner, or complete word work.  While students worked on this, I met with reading groups to practice sight words and changing the beginning and ends of words to create new ones!  This is a great activity to practice with your first grader- Can you go from the word "Cat" to the word "map" by only changing one letter at a time?

In writing we completed our journals from Four Winds last week.

This week starts our social studies unit on Community.  We do have some community helpers lined up to come in and speak to us, but would love more if you or anyone in your family would like to come in!

Open house is THIS THURSDAY October, 4 at 6:00pm.  We hope you can make it!
