Open House

It was wonderful to see so many of you at Open House this evening and to meet some of you for the first time!  The first graders were so excited to show you all of the work they have been doing so far this year.

If you did not sign up for a conference for either Monday, November 19th or Tuesday, November 20th, I will be sending a sign up home.

Today was a very busy day in first grade!  We used new materials in math (rulers and dominoes) and participated in our three reading options- Reading to Self, Reading to a Partner and Word Work.

Hannah leads Morning Meeting for her awesome behavior!

Ryan shares one of his favorite stories with Hailey during Reading.  (I think he's showing her the "zairs under the stairs."

This morning we talked about what makes Porters Point such a special community.  The students believe that Project Inside Out, Four Winds, their Unified Arts, and so many helpful people makes this school a very special community.  I couldn't agree more.

We had two police officers visit to share with us about their jobs.  We noticed a lot of similarities between the two jobs we've learned about so far.  Like the nurse and doctor yesterday, police men and women need many tools to do their job well.  They also work in the night-time sometimes and work hard to keep people safe.  We loved looking at their handcuffs and we impressed them when we already knew what their "baton" was called.

Avery offers to be a helper...

and then realizes that she's being set up when the radio she's holding starts sounding an alarm because it's too far away!

We were so impressed by orange handcuffs!

Can you see the baton in action?

This evening at Open House there were sign-ups for room parents and for classroom volunteers.  I'll send the information home in folders tomorrow for those of you who weren't able to attend!
