Events of the Week

Our word of the week is achieve- the definition we are using is "to find success or reach a goal."  We've had great discussions so far this week about times in our lives when we have achieved something and how we felt about that.  The first graders loved reading how to pronounce it, "uh-cheev".  They thought "cheev" was just so funny!  Try to fit this word into your conversations with your first grader as often as you can.

In math today we learned about how to tell time to the hour.  Tomorrow we will practice to the half-hour and discuss the difference between a.m. and p.m.  Telling time is such an important skill to have and the best way to improve is to keep practicing!  Our friend, Aaron, has a wrist-watch that he wears every day and is our resident time-teller.  He keeps us on time all day long!  Practicing counting by 5's is especially important in time-telling as we learn to tell time to the minute.

Trace, Ava and Connor learn a new 10's frame Go Fish game with Mrs. H.

Mark, Joud and Jordan practice adding with the number line

Summer, Colin and Ryan P. use the geo-boards.  (Can you tell we were practicing telling time today?  It looks like they've created clocks!)

We read the story Officer Buckle and Gloria today.  The students loved that Officer Buckle's dog, Gloria, acted out all of his Safety Tips.  We also discussed a police officer's job in our community.

In writing today we practiced taking an idea out of our Writer's Notebooks and mapping it for a story.  We talked about how good writers write what they know.  The first graders are currently working on stories about alligators, their family, Disney World, soccer and baseball to name a few.

Sharing is a very important part of our Writer's Workshop.  We try to share what we've been working on every day!
This student is working on a story about visiting the Jay Peak water park.

Remember that Open House is this Thursday at 6:00pm!  We'd love to see you that night.

It's also not too late to visit our room to talk about your job in our community.  Let me know if you'd like to come in!

Whenever we come in from recess or P.E. it has become custom that all of the students try to spike their hair up.  Today they requested that I photograph their hair like this and "please make sure you put it on the blog."  I'm not one to disappoint first graders, so here they are in all of their post-recess, post-P.E., sweaty glory!
