Halloween Happenings

Our Halloween party will begin Wednesday, October 31st at 1:45pm.  We will parade around the school and then have a celebration in our room.  Students should bring their costume with them to school and plan to put it on over their clothes.

This morning in math we learned about even and odd numbers.  We realized that odd numbers are numbers that can't be put into pairs like, 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9.  Even numbers are numbers that always have a partner like 2, 4, 6, and 8.  We also realized that we can tell if a number is even or odd by simply looking at the LAST number!  We had a lot of fun deciding if numbers like 2001, 346, 967, and 438 were even or odd numbers.   Yesterday, we discussed patterning- look at all of these first graders who found patterns in their clothing!

 Striped shirts

 Patterned socks!

Another striped shirt!

In reading, one group discussed how the letter "r" changes the way the letter "a" sounds when they're together in words like yard, card, car, and garage.  Another group looked at the letters "sn" together and practiced the sound they made and listened for them in reading.  A third group looked at the letters "oo" together and realized that two "o"'s together can say "oooh" like boo, goo, too, and moo or "uuuh" like look, book, took, nook.

Ryan shows us his word work!

We read, There's a Map on My Lap again today and listened carefully for map vocabulary words.  The words we've learned so far are Compass Rose, North, South, East, West, Longitude, Latitude and scale.

Remember that this is our week to collect food for the Colchester Food Shelf!  If you can, please send in any non-perishable items you are able to contribute.
