Super Students!

The day started out on a funny foot when the first graders realized that the date was 10-11-12.  They just could not believe the numbers went in ORDER! Like, TEN, ELEVEN, TWELVE! I mean, has that ever happened before?!?!

We've been working so hard in our Writer's Notebooks lately that we took time this morning to share our favorite piece so far.  Some students shared a story map, some shared a story, and others shared an idea entry.  The first graders love writing and are so excited to work on their first book.  I was so impressed with what wonderful audience members they were too.

Gavin shares his story about football with his dad

Wallah read a story about her baby sister

Connor relaxes in the Author's Seat and tells us about his visit to the ocean

Ryan, very proudly, shared a story about his awesome day!

Aaron works with Ava to read her story about the Botanical Gardens

In math we practiced more penny and nickel counting and started to write addition sentences.  We talked about the + and = signs and what those mean and we practiced writing the whole number model on our math slates.   In math today we had to write numbers by 10's and finished at 120.  It is hard to count over 100 so that is something we've been working on a lot.

In reading during Word Work we used the slates again to write red words, word families and sentences.  The first graders are loving their choices during literacy and have been working so hard to read to themselves, their friends, and me!

During writing we worked more on the stories we had shared from the morning.

As a class, we had an AMAZING day today.  The first graders are so considerate and thoughtful and supportive to and of one another.  Please let your child know that you know how hard they're working at school and how proud you are of them.

Two of our first grade friends made it all the way to the top of our behavior chart- Super Student!  Gavin and Trace got to call home in front of the class and let their parents know how awesome they are.  This was, so far, one of the most special moments in our classroom.  We are all so happy for them!

The scarecrows have started rolling in... I *love* them!  I cannot wait to get them all up in the hallway!
