Pennies and Nickels and Dimes- Oh My!

Today in SWR we added red words to our word rings.  During Word Work in literacy the students are able to use their word rings to quiz each other and practice their words.  We added a component to Word Work today which the students *loved*-- play dough!  They are now able to form words using play dough.  They did a great job "writing" their names, sight words, red words, and word family words.

The Fry sight word list is in their homework folders tonight- please use this list to help your student learn and practice their sight words as much as possible.  If your student is already comfortable with these words, see if they can combine them to write sentences or a story.

In math today the first graders surprised me by alreading knowing that 5 pennies equals 1 nickel!  We were able to exchange pennies for nickels and counted a variety of pennies and nickels together.  Time and money are such important skills for first graders, it would be great if you could practice every night!

We are working on a project that showcases one of our favorite communities- the Porters Point School community!  I am excited to share this with all of you when it is complete.  The first graders have been working very hard on this and are excited as well.

To go along with our study of our community, we are partnering with the Colchester Food Shelf the week of October 22-26.  This week we will be learning about the importance of a food shelf in our community and will be collecting dry goods for the food shelf.  I will remind you again when it's closer, but I know that being able to prepare for things like this ahead of time is helpful!

In our effort to complete our special project today we did not take many pictures in the classroom!  We promise that the final result will make up for the lack of pictures today!
