Short Week

This week the students only have school M-Th.  Friday is a teacher in-service day.

This morning during Morning Meeting we introduced our WOW Word of the Week- forlorn.  Forlorn means, "sad or lonely."  We talked about when our pets or our friends might feel forlorn and we practiced using it in a sentence.

Our new red word of the week is you.  The first graders can't believe this is one of our words because it is so "easy"!  They practiced spelling it, writing it and using it in a sentence.  We've done such a wonderful job with short "a" word families that this week we're moving on to short "i" word families.  The first family is the "__it" family.  We realized we knew many words already that fit in this family.

During math today we practiced adding cents and figured out what items cost more or less and by how much.  This is really hard to figure out so we used our coins and number lines to help us.  The rest of this week we will be practicing telling time, counting coins and writing number models.  At the end of the week we will have our assessment on Unit 2.

 Matthew and Avery count coins

Colin and Summer check each other's work

Aaron and Trace group coins and then count them

Hannah and Ryan F. work on counting too

Hailey and Jordan wanted to challenge themselves with 10 coins!

In reading today we learned about our last activity for the Daily 5- listen to reading!  The students thought that we would listen on our classroom cd player.  They were so excited to learn that we will be reading at www.raz-kids.com and they each have their own login to track their progress!  Look for a letter with more information about this in you child's folder.  I also let them know that I receive an update every time they login so I'll know how much they're practicing at home.

In writing we learned that all good writers create a title for their work and illustrate the cover. We also talked about how transition words help us when we're writing to move to another idea.  The transition words we learned are first, second, later, once, next, then, earlier, suddenly, meanwhile, last, finally, before, after, soon, yesterday and tomorrow.

We have learned so much about the people in our community we are now learning about the places in our community.

Hannah is our student of the week! We think we're all going to learn how to spell the word "gymnastics" because Hannah LOVES everything about it!
