Thoughtful Thursday

After we blew through Morning Meeting and SWR this morning- we're getting amazingly good at tapping out our red words- we had time to read two of my very favorite stories.  They are written by Kathryn Otashi and called Zero and One.  They are wonderful, simple, stories about the power we have in our lives to make a difference.  The first graders LOVED the words and illustrations in these books and asked that I share them with all of you here so you could try to remember to look for them.

We worked more with giving change in math today.  We had fun "buying" items from the vending machine.  When the first graders finished their work they pretended they were in an ice cream shop and took turns serving and ordering ice cream.  They paid with pretend money and got change for their purchases. I'm not sure where they EVER got an idea for an ice cream shop...but they did a wonderful job!  I think we may have some scoopers in our future!

During literacy we rotated through stations and created author pages for books we are writing.  The students described themselves and told important things about their lives.  We looked at examples from other books we've read this year to get some good ideas about what to write.

In science, we candled our eggs to see inside of them.  This is safe for the chicks and is similar to an ultra-sound.  We looked for heartbeats and blood vessels.  We tried to figure out which eggs had chicks growing in them.  It was very hard to tell because it is still early in the hatching process.

Tomorrow is Poetry Cafe!  Please practice your child's poem with them and join us if you can!
