The Week Ahead

Today was a wonderful start to our week!  We had two first graders who earned a browse through our Awesome Behavior Catalog and they both chose to bring a fluffy friend to school tomorrow!  We are so proud of them!

Summer and Matthew hold their choices proudly

This week in S.W.R. we are discussing the letters "m", "f", and "c" and the sounds they make.  We have added "look" and "am" to our Red Words (words you just have to know when you see them) and will be discussing the "ab" word family.  So far we've brainstormed that cab, scab, grab, and crab can all fit in that family!  Finally, we are discussing and practicing leaving spaces between our words when we write, always starting a sentence with an uppercase letter and always ending a sentence with a period.

In math today we had an exploration day and we were able to check out math materials that we will be using this year.  We explored pattern blocks, geo boards and base 10 blocks.  The first graders were *so* creative during this time; it is apparent that many of them love symmetrical designs.

At the end of this week we will be having our first math assessment.  The students know that this is coming and we have been reviewing all of the information we could be asked to show we know.  Some things that you might want to practice with your children at home are- counting by 1's; identifying which numbers come before and after a specific number; counting by 2's and 5's; and writing numbers.

There is also a math packet in your child's homework folder tonight.  Please only complete 1 page per night and send it in the next day.  This ensures that the students are practicing what we've learned already and that homework won't take too long.

During our writing time we practiced more with the parts of a really good, first-grade sentence and wrote about our weekends.  In social studies we are continuing to talk "All About Me."  The students are completing informational books about themselves.

If you have any questions or concerns please call, email or stop by the room.  Have a great week!
