Tally, Man

In math today we introduced tally marks.  We discussed how they must always only have five (5!) lines and that we use them to count how many items we have or to keep track of information.  We took a tally of our classroom and found that 5 of us have dogs, 6 of us have cats, 4 of us have fish, and one lucky first grader has a bunny!

To help us remember when to use a \ through the four |||| we practiced whispering, "one, two, three, four..." and when we got to "Five!" We would say it louder and slash through.  Take a tally of things around your house with your first grader today and let them do the tallying!  Some of us were more confident using tally marks than others- the more practice the better!  Tomorrow we will be rolling dice and keeping track of which numbers we roll the most!

We have also been working on our "First Grade Looks Like" bulletin board.  We have mastered what first graders look like at recess!  Check out these awesome pictures of your first graders hard at... PLAY!
