Election Day

To coincide with what we've been learning about the upcoming election and voting, our class will be hosting a mock Presidential election tomorrow in celebration of the real election.  If you would like to stop by our room tomorrow to cast your vote, please do so.  (And remember to cast your official vote at your polling place.)  We will be presenting the results of this election and what we've learned about elections and voting this Friday morning at our school-wide morning meeting.  The students are very excited about this!

Two groups of students work on posters to encourage our friends at PPS to vote tomorrow.

This morning in SWR we introduced the new red word said and word families, "___id" and "___ig".  Our word of the week is, "evacuate."  The students did a fabulous job using the word evacuate in sentences for the very first time!

In math we've started reviewing for our Unit 3 chapter test.  The test will focus on combinations of 10, frames and arrows, and counting dimes, nickels and pennies.  Our test will be this Thursday.

Avery and Summer show how they can write numbers by 10's

Joud works on adding numbers in the hundreds

We read a new book about elections called, My Teacher for President.  We learned about how teaching is a lot like being President...in some ways.  Ask your first grader to tell you some of the similarities we found.

During literacy today, a reading group was working with me and we were reading a story about a little girl who was shopping and lost her grandmother.  I asked the students how the girl was feeling based on the look on her face.  One student said, "She looks very worried."  Another student said, "Aw, she looks forlorn. You can tell she's sad and lonely."  Then, a third student said, "Wow- I bet that Grandmother's livid she can't find her granddaughter!"  I cannot tell you how impressed I am that the students are starting to use our vocabulary words in their everyday lives.  It is amazing!

Here are some first graders hard at work today:

Hailey practices using our new red word in a sentence- you can see she remembered all of the important pieces of a sentence!

Wallah built a sentence with our new red word.

Ryan P. works on building our WOW words.

Colin practices our red word and words in the "__id" word family.

Then he built a sentence remembering uppercase "I"'s!

Ava works with our word families of the week.

Jordan wrote a(nother!) story about battleships.  Check out that awesome illustration!

Ryan F. built a sentence using our new red word.
