Fact Fluency

This morning when we tapped out our red words in SWR we did *such* a fabulous job, we got to SKIP writing totally during SWR!  Can you believe it?!?!  We tapped and spelled all of our red words and generated a LONG list of words for the __ob family.

In math we looked at an addition table and highlighted the facts that we (should) know.  These facts are every fact from 0-9 +0, 0-9+1, combinations of 10 (3+7, 6+4), and doubles (5+5, 3+3).  We realized there are SO many facts we already know!  We also realized that there are a lot of facts that we still need practice with- without fingers!  Just like in reading, we need to work to become fluent in math.  You can help your child do this by helping them become Fact Fluent.  Practicing addition facts from 0-12 will help immensely with this!  You can do this in the car, at dinner, or anywhere that's convenient for you!  Encourage your child to think about the numbers and not to use their fingers!  Just like our red words in reading, we just need to know these addition facts as well.

After math, we needed a break from all of that hard work, so we did what every normal person does when they need a break- DANCE PARTY!  Check out these moves:

In reading today we read one of my favorite stories from when I was in first grade, A Chair for My Mother.  We are using this story (and others) to work on asking questions as we read.  We are also using this story to give us ideas for our new realistic fiction writing pieces we started planning for today.

These first graders use/notice possessive "s"
This afternoon, we sorted solid objects using their properties in science.
