Double, Double

This morning in SWR we generated more words that fit in the ____ob and ___ox families.  I gave the students a clue for a word that fits in BOTH of these families. They have until Friday to try to figure out what the word is.  The secret word has 3 syllables and can mean the same thing as annoying or irritating.  Can you think of the secret word?

We used double facts to help us add +1 and +2 in math today.  We noticed that when you double a number, the answer is always even.  We also noticed that once you know your doubles, it's easier to add higher numbers.  Encourage your child to use double facts (2+2, 5+5, 7+7, 9+9, etc) when they are solving addition problems.  We are really working hard to eliminate counting on our fingers when adding- this helps!

We practiced this a lot today!  We started with a double... 4+4 for example...and we know that the answer is 8.  We used THAT to help us solve 4+5 (a +1 problem) and 4+6 (a +2 problem).  Doubling makes math easier!  When we were done we played Math Bingo on the iPads.  We LOVED Math Bingo and will be adding this to our math center rotations.  The first graders are so excited!

 Math Bingo!

These two first graders practice question sentences.  (It's all about Star Wars these days in Room 3!)

In science we learned about solids and used the properties of solids to describe different objects we had in our bag.  We organized our information on a chart in our science notebooks.  Tomorrow we will be comparing the same objects in a different way.  We also learned that everything in the world is made of matter and the three states of matter are solid, liquid and gas.  Ask your first grader to tell you about how water changes in this way.

We had our very first DARE class today with Officer Fontaine.  The focus of our work with Officer Fontaine was personal safety.

When we checked in about how our poetry reading at home was going we realized that many, many of us forgot to practice our poems last night!  Please remember to have your child read their poem a few times a night.  They do NOT need to memorize it!
