And the Difference Is

We started our day reviewing our red words and word families again.  It was tricky today because we added plural words and questions.  We also briefly discussed contractions and how sometimes it is easier to use them than the two words.

In math we continued to compare numbers but today we added a next step: we had to figure out the difference between the two numbers.  This will build a base to start subtracting but it can be very confusing.  We discussed many different strategies for this inlcuding counting up, counting back, and finding the space between.  After we completed our work, we played Top It Compare.  We loved this game because we got to keep (for the game) the extra amount of pennies we had!

Ryan B. demonstrates how to use a number grid to count up.

In reading we learned how to show that something belongs to someone- by adding an 's.  We practiced this as a class and generated sentences that show belonging. We discussed how simply adding an "s" at the end of the word just means more than one.  Adding an " 's" shows that an object belongs to someone.  Once we realized this, we couldn't BELIEVE the amount of " 's' " we found in our books- including Mr. Popper's Penguins .  We are just loving this book, too.  Today, a friend arrived for Captain Cook because he has been lonely.  Together, the two penguins are enjoying snow and ice INSIDE the house!  Can you imagine?  Snow inside?!?!

A published story! Always reason to celebrate!

We had another indoor recess day and spent it playing air hockey on our tables and building Star War legos.

This afternoon, we logged into our email accounts again and sent messages to each other.  We *love* emailing.

It has been a wonderful start of 2013 in Room 3.  I hope all of you are staying warm and having fun!
